NEW RELEASE

Saxophone Piano Guitar Bass  DUO and more  : BALLADS & STANDARDS

Ballads and Standards
This idea came out of a great duo performance that Nikolaj and I did at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival in 2012. After a series of hardhitting concerts we decided to chill things out and start with a ballad. This felt so great that we decided on the spot to play one ballad after another. That is when we knew that one day we would go in the studio to record this concept. We reworked it a little, and added two guest: Thomas Morgan on Bass and Vic Juris on Guitar.
1)   The Peacocks
2)   Ask Me Now
3)   The Shadow Of Your Smile
4)   In A Sentimental Mood
5)   Somewhere Over The Rainbow
6)   Never Let Me Go
7)   Body And Soul

The father of Mommaas, Henk Mommaas, was a known painter in Amsterdam who loved jazz and improvised music. He mentioned on many occasions to his son that he should record a solo record, only the tenor, no distractions, only him and his horn, his music. Maybe one of the reasons was so that his son could experience what it is like to be in front of a white canvas, alone, tasting the power of solitude, feeling the energy of challenging yourself to excel, digging deep into ones soul to found new ground, new colors and new forms.

In 2009 Henk Mommaas past away which triggered this idea to a new level and within three months of his passing Marc was in the studio for the first recording session. This recording was left alone for a few years but Marc picked up the thread in 2013 to finish up the project with a response to the highly emotional and intense 2009 recording. The recording came out strong and shows Marc Mommaas at his best, with great finesse, a powerful and human tone, with emotion and depth. This recording is not for the weak-hearted, it is a recording made by an artist for anyone who has an ear and has the ability to connect to the process of creation, for anyone that is able to sit down, isolate oneself from all distractions and listen: "L'art pour art."

Inspired by: Henk Mommaas, Kandinsky, Bach, Malevich and Schnittke.
Recorded and mastered at: Systems Two, Brooklyn, by Michael Marciano.

The Recording 'Globalmotiontrio' was made in 1999 in the Netherlands after a tour in Europe with Mommaas debuting as leader. This release includes Nikolaj Hess on piano and John Hebert on bass and all the compositions are by Marc Mommaas. He also uses soprano sax and bass-clarinet on this recording.
The music is spacious and is a counter part of a 2003 release of Global Motion
Among the compositions are Copenhagen Suite written in tribute to the time Mommaas spent in Copenhagen on stage and with students, Rauschenbergs Combines, written based on the impulsive 'no second guessing' workstyle of this great artist, and a piece inspired by the famous Coltrane changes named Minor Changes. This recording has an embracing warmth to it, with outstanding interaction between the bandmembers.

LANDMARC

Saxophone Drums Guitar Guitar Guitar
Landmarc Cover
Every recording of Mommaas has a sense of purpose, and perhaps this new release is the pinacle of the series of recordings done by Mommaas, with a unique unorthodox concept firmly standing on the forefront of where improvised music is leading us challenging new fresh ideas with extremely strong and convincing execution by all bandmembers. Mommaas started working on this concept in 2005 in collaboration with Tony Moreno. Guitarist Nate Ratley joined the group as a core element of the group and on the recording Guitarists Vic Juris and Rez Abassi are added as extra texture. Here Mommaas travels deeper into the diverse rhythmic language of Improvised music.

Landmarc is an inspired mix of tenor sax, electric strings and percussion sounds. A beginning-to-end cohesive set that should give a profile boost to a deserving artist. ~By Dan McClenaghan (2010)

This is an intense, challenging, heartfelt and intelligent work of adult art. And, as its title predicts, it is sure stand not only as a landmark in Mommaas’ career, but also in the recorded twining of acoustic and electric instrumentation. ~By Matt Marshall (2010)

BALANCE - duo

Saxophone Piano
Balance Cover
In '97 Mommaas had the idea to start his recording career with a saxophone piano duo release. But events took a different path and the right moment presented itself in 2006 with support of Sunnyside records and his longtime collaborator Nikolaj Hess on piano. This is a very special and rather unique recording incoorporating both Polyharmonic material in a mixed meter context and the opposite approach, a free piece, a straight ahead composition and two saxophone solo pieces.
Funny Bones Jones is a piece hinting to the simularities between the jugglers in a movie named Funny Bones starring Oliver Platt and Elvin Jones legendary feel on sticks and brushes. Aftermath is based on the vibe of silence, frustration and anticipation after 9/11 in NYC. Sorcerer's dance is based on an elegant mixed meter form and Amissirac is Carissima (written by Dave Liebman) spelled backwards .

Mommaas has created an unfaltering suite of compositions that express new things while studiously avoiding, for the most part, the free-jazz route. Add to this the fact that both musicians’ playing is damn good and you have an important record.” - Jeff Dayton-Johnson, All About Jazz' (May 2006)

'This record of duo recordings showcases the Dutch saxophonist at his very best....' -- Justin Glick - WNUR 89.3 FM Chicage (March 2006)

GLOBAL MOTION

Released in 2003 this recording became an important stepping stone forward for Mommaas, freshly signed by Sunnnyside records, and followed by critical acclaim. Master Percussionist Tony Moreno joined Global Motion as an intregal part of the group and as special guest Rez Abbasi was added as an extra voice on guitar and electric sitar to emphasize the different polyrhythmic elements in the compositions put forward on this recording.
All compositions are written by Mommaas. Maktub, Something Else and Copenhagen suite are true-composed incooperating Polyrhythmic grooves and mixed meter principles, African FBI is a piece dedicated to Inack, a friend whom I used to meet on Saturdays in a famous Saxophone Shop in NYC, based on a straight triplet feel in 7 and 8, plus a cycle in 21. Intuition is a melody only piece with free interpretation.
