SPECIAL GUEST REGGIE WORKMAN

Together with Armen Donelian I started this annual workshop with the emphasis on small group playing. In the summer of 2009 we had as special guest DAVE LIEBMAN , in 2010 JIM MCNEELY, in 2011 VIC JURIS and in 2012 JOE LOCKE. This year we are very fortunate to have the great CHRIS WASHBURNE as part of the workshop.

More big news is that we are officially not-for-profit. If you are a student interested in participating or if you are interested in making a donation please visit the official website: www.hudsonjazzworks.org

The workshop is in Hudson, NY (Hour and a half from NYC). Expect masterclasses, combo classes and individual classes from 9am to 11pm. Plus there is a secret weapon, a chef cook who will feed the hungry. The workshop lasts four days and will conclude with a concert by the students and staff at the Opera House in quaint downtown Hudson.

Visit : www.hudsonjazzworks.org for more information and application forms.

Marc Mommaas tenor Saxophone

Marc Mommaas is available for private lessons.

If you live in the NYC area or are in town for a couple of days feel free to contact me regarding private lessons. I teach at Michiko Studios, around the corner from Times Square. For students that are out of town, consider a Skype lesson.

Topics range from tone quality, improvisation, harmony, rhythm, approach notes, melodic development, voice-leading, bebop language and technique to more advanced principles such as rhythmic variation, mixed meter, polyrhythm, polyharmony, superimposition and composition. All levels are welcome.

Philosophy

The way you practice has to be in tune with where you stand in the music. A practicing regime that works for you at this time might not be beneficial for you two years from now since your set of skills and depth in the music will change. Music/life is never static and your practicing routine should be in tune with where you stand and in which direction you would like to go.

What you practice depends on a few factors starting with your level. It is necessary to get your basics together no matter what direction you choose. This requires an understanding of your strengths and weaknesses and the willingness to tackle the issues with the ultimate goal being to find an equilibrium with yourself and the music. On a higher level you develop your personal sound by exploring different topics of interest and by using composition as your main tool to establish direction.

Schedule a lesson through skype.

If you are not in New York a great new option is to set up a lesson through skype. The lesson is $85 an hour and handouts based on the topics and theories discussed will be emailed to you in pdf format. For this you need a Skype account.

1 - order a one hour lesson ( $85 )

Paypall:

2 - email me with your questions or topic of interest and your Skype email

3 - we will schedule a time.
4 - email me a sample of your playing as an mp3 or other music format (this is optional)

I have had great experiences with lessons through this medium so give it a try; it is a great alternative if you are not in the neighborhood.
