The NYJW Saxophone Quartet, directed by Marc Mommaas on Soprano sax, includes Sunhyun Yoo on Alto sax, Eli Hershiser on Tenor sax and Matthew Mayers on Baritone Sax. Born out of a workshop setting this formation matured over the last decade into a professional close-knit ensemble. The members of the quartet are all NY based Jazz musicians with an ear for a wide variety of musical styles. On this recording arrangements are performed based on the works of Astor Piazolla (The Tango Suite), Johannes Sebastian Bach (Fugues), George Gershwin (Porgy & Bess) and warm up etudes composed by Marc Mommaas. We truly hope you enjoy our music, we are already looking forward to our next recording and we appreciate your interest and support.
“Playing in the saxophone quartet for the last few years has improved our individual saxophone technique such as pitch, tone and expressiveness but has also taught us to play with one mind and one breath — a fundamental requirement for high level classical chamber group playing. This recording documents our current progress.” – Sunhyun Yoo
